The Akitio Neutrino U3+ enclosure is for everyone, and more specifically for some than others. Like many other enclosures of its kind, it supports a nice array of connection standards. The function is what you'd expect from an external hard drive enclosure. The Neutrino U3+ has the added benefit of being designed beautifully, and fits as a companion to your other Mac hardware.
The Neutrino is both Mac and PC friendly. The Mini USB 3.0 (which is backwards compatible to your USB 2 port) and/or dual FW 800 ports will interface with whatever you make available. The look and feel of this enclosure is more "Mac-ish".
One of the nice things about a hard drive enclosure is the ability to purchase bare drives to swap out. The Neutrino is designed to take 2.5" drives (12.5mm). Most users know that it's important to look at the size/speed/RAM of the bare drive that resides in the case, but it is nice to have a handsome case to support that drive.
Because the Neutrino U3+ has a heatsink on the bottom of the drive instead of a fan, the drive is smaller and lighter than some other PC external cases. The smaller case makes it easier to take this drive with you. An additional benefit from its small size is the ability to take this with you. Most drives can be powered from the USB or FW connection. If you don't need external power, then you're all set.
If, for some reason, you need to have some external power, the drive enclosure comes with a strange array of plugs. Here in the United States, a standard plug type comes with external drive cases. The Neutrino comes with an adapter that provides several options. One of the benefits would be to the traveler who happens to find themselves in other countries regularly - and in need of power.
The benefit of this enclosure case is its beauty. It just looks great.
Although the performance of the drive will vary with the type of bare drive that you choose to put into the case, the option of USB 3.0 and FW800 (9pin) will make moving forward with this enclosure easy. It's well designed and sturdy - providing good seating for your drive, and adequate screws to secure the case once closed.
The enclosure is pricey at $99, but you can find it on Amazon for under $75.
